Congratulations to Mike Prince, who proved that you need to be good at everything to win. Although not first out of Semer Water, Mike was not many places down and he gradually overhauled those out in front of him before riding off the front to reach Helwith Bridge ten minutes clear. At the end of the run, Mike had increased his lead to 14 minutes over Graham Shand, who had himself done a fast run to pull himself up from 4th at the end of the cycling. The fastest runner, by a few seconds over Mike, was Craig Murtagh, who was able to raise his position from 6th to 3rd.
Two others who excelled at running were Steve Winterburn (14th to 6th) and Jonathan Deegan (26th to 7th); the latter helping Mercury TC take the team award with this tremendous run. Other clearly enjoyed their visit to Pen-y-Ghent somewhat less: Geof Houghton dropped from 5th to 18th and we can only imagine the suffering of Andrew Jackson who fell from 2nd after the cycling to 22nd. Andrew's speciality is swimming and he was equal first in the swim with Martin Lee, in a time of 13 minutes. Martin showed great consistency by finishing 3rd in the cycling and 4th overall. Some people like the challenge of a handicap: Stefan Forge started 10 minutes after everyone else, yet still fought his way through to 24th place.
The BTA Referee present on this occasion formally disqualified two competitors for wearing cycling head protection that did not conform to BTA specifications. This event is run under BTA Rules so, unfortunately, there was no alternative to this action. It would be wise for all entrants to acquaint themselves with the Rules in the British Triathlon Association Handbook.
