THE SALT AYRE CHALLENGE

28th February 1999

Andy McAllister, for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph, reports: "Wading chest deep in a tributary of the River Lune, scaling a mountain of horse manure and climbing over and under an articulated lorry - all these were among the obstacles linked by a muddy five-mile (sic) run called the Salt Ayre Challenge. Amazingly, there were 400 entrants for the inaugural event at Lancaster (458 actually - JS).
The winner was Ian Greenwood of Clayton running for the Night Owls team. In the 1.5 mile run along the river bank, Greenwood, Steve Blakelock of Rossendale and Brendan Bolland from Newburgh Nomads led the field. They passed through the first set of obstacles together, but on the return Greenwood pulled away to win by 16 seconds from Bolland, with Blakelock third."

(note that due to a finisher around position 170/1 leaving the funnel before his number was recorded, the times shown from that point onwards are likely to be 1 position out of sync until near the end)
